Treating them as the same thing creates vague notices that explain neither practice well. Clear disclosure separates what happens in the browser from what happens to submitted text.

Explain the layers separately

Do not bury text-processing terms inside a generic cookie banner. If someone submits an essay or document, they need a direct notice near the submission action explaining what is analyzed and how long it is retained.
Worked example: a useful pre-submit notice
“We analyze the text you submit to provide a probability-based writing review. Do not submit personal, medical, or confidential information unless your organization has approved this use. The result is guidance and is not a finding of authorship.”
This example describes purpose and boundaries. It should be adapted to the actual service behavior; do not promise immediate deletion or no retention unless the implementation truly provides it.
Keep consent choices meaningful
Non-essential analytics should not be required merely to read a public guide. If a service uses consent controls for region-specific legal obligations, make choices visible, record them appropriately, and allow users to change them. For organizational users, connect the public notice with the internal data-processing and retention policy.
